Haste to the Wedding [D] - July 25, 2024
Просмотров 390День назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from July 25, 2024. “Haste to the Wedding” is a well-known session standard. No idea where we first learned it. But the end of the B part has a kind of corny/jocular skip that I thought must have a dance to go along with it. But apparently, WORDS went along with it first. A Dublin play back in 1762, A Trip to the Dargle AKA The Irish Wedding, put these word...
Girl from the Big House [D] - July 18, 2024
Просмотров 62314 дней назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from July 18, 2024, played just after returning home from the great (sweltering) outdoors. We used to play “Girl from the Big House" when we were going over to Ireland frequently in the early 2000s, especially with pipers. And we were so excited when it showed up on Angelina Carberry’s 2005 album-a great banjo performance of it with her dad on box. But it’s...
Nora Crionna [G] - July 11, 2024
Просмотров 54321 день назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from July 11, 2024. Nora Crionna (Crionna means ‘wise’ in Irish) is a smart little jig in G. It was recorded by Eddie Moloney in 1972 and then Willie Clancy and Mary Bergin. There’s a Wise Nora tune in O’Farrell’s Pocket Companion, published in the late 1700s. But that’s a pretty different tune. The end of the B part the second time around has a handsome li...

Jig Thursday - Smiling Bride [D]
Просмотров 651Месяц назад
What a giant inspiration was Charlie Lennon. Great fiddle and piano player. Kind, kind person. And writer of the most excellent tunes ever. All the twists and turns, and sunny little bits of humor packed in each composition: no one did it with quite the brightness and harmonic invention … but also the easiness… as he. Always clever and intricate; never forced. “The Smiling Bride,” is just ONE o...
Jig Thursday - Brendan Tonra's [D-played here in G]
Просмотров 5422 месяца назад
"Brendan Tonra's" was our "Jig Thursday" selection from May 30, 2024. Brendan Tonra was born in Gowlan, County Mayo and came to Boston in 1959. He wrote a number of interesting tunes, including this one, which is probably his best known. He wrote it in the key of D, and we tried it up in G here to suit the range of the flute. Apparently "Tonra's" was Brendan’s third ever composition, and he wro...
Jig Thursday - Bold Doherty [E Min]
Просмотров 5762 месяца назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from May 23, 2024. It's a song in jig time, and we have Galway and Clare associations with the tune (Angelina Carberry playing it on banjo, Josephine Marsh playing it on accordion, and Niamh Parsons singing it on her album In My Prime she got the melody from Josephine). But an earlier version came from Antrim, collected by Herbert Hughes in 1903. The first ...
Request corner - Colonel Fraser [Reel in G] - DECONSTRUCTED!
Просмотров 9312 месяца назад
Well, I've had a few requests for this big old G reel. It's a 5-parter, so there's lots to chew on. I've done my best to present a clean and clear version: ... with some John McKenna melodic twists (the way he recorded it in 1930, with just the four parts) ... along with the five-part form and general inspiration from Conal O'Grada (whose Top of Coom recording was the first recording of Colonel...
Jig Thursday - High Part of the Road [G]
Просмотров 6772 месяца назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from May 16, 2024. Tommy Peoples recorded the “High Part of the Road” with Paul Brady in 1976, and it’ll never get better than that. But it’s still a great tune. And while we quickly played through it for this week’s Jig Thursday, the sun came out! Ending a fairly glum day with some cheer. We started this 'series' on a diff social media platform. We wanted ...
Jig Thursday - Eddie Moloney's Jig [D]
Просмотров 4602 месяца назад
This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from May 9, 2024. This is a charming tune we might have first heard on the great Carberry album from 2001. But it’s older than that, and associated with fine céilí band flute player, Eddie Moloney from Ballinakill. There are a good handful of Galway tunes associated with him (including one we recorded on our Fine WInter’s Night album). This jig is also some...

Welcome to Canada guys!!! Have fun in Goderich. Wish I could be there to play a few tunes with you both. Hup …eh ;)
Great tune Shannon, was going to ask that you cover it when I wet back and found you already had!! 🫣😂 Thank you. 🙏🏻
I’m partial to the Bothy Band recording.
Rakish Paddy is such a classic that everyone should learn. Thanks for explaining the bit about C naturals and C sharps as it does change the character of the melody. I would add that, because it is easy, that there are many opportunities to add ornaments and rolls in the B part. There is much debate over what is the 'core' or basic melody. This version is really something one can 'build on'.
Great tune and beautifully played!
Awesome 😀👍💚
Thank you for that nice version of Maids of Selma. I have been working on that over the last year (Roanoke VA session).
We just love, love this tune. Maybe we can play it together in October--visiting your neck of the woods Oct 4th!
Love the songs and love the "sneak" appearance.
haha on the visitor. So funny!
Lovely :)
thanks for giving it a listen!
Matt- Thanks for your insight and generous spirit in making and posting these. I will have many more questions, but I'll start with an obvious one for a complete beginner. Those small spacers below the bridge on your strings: what is their purpose? I assume it's to deaden sound below the bridge? Are they available commercially, or is that something you've rigged on your own?
thanks! yeah, those are little grommets that I put there to deaden any behind the bridge sympathetic vibrations. they are little rubber things, I think used for cable routing in electronic projects. can't recall where I got them; ordered a bag 10 years ago!
Have you noticed that there is someone creeping in the background at 0:50?! 😂
So funny, right? We shot that as a quick warm up. Assumed we'd do a "real take," but decided it was so hilarious with our son creeping around behind us. Very gracious that he was trying not to interrupt the vid.
Love that big interval leap at :04. You always make it so interesting! Thanks for another inspiring, and motivational tune.
Yeah, the leap up to the G is a nice way around that first phrase. Thanks for giving it a listen and noticing/appreciating that with me!
Great video, so timely too because I plan to play this with a friend at our local session tonight. We made a little story of tunes- Maid on the Green, Will You Come Home With Me and Haste to the Wedding. Also I love seeing your special guest star in this video😂
Love your narrative set, Susan. Also, love that the YT folks noticed the crawling visitor. When we posted on FB, fewer folks picked up on that. (Guess he was stealthy... like Tobian Fünke.)
Really appreciate and value these videos and your tune of the month! I've been playing for 5 years and since finding your videos last month I think I've doubled my tune bank! Love your emphasis on breathing technique and rhythmic clarity! Definitely the best tutorial videos online! Thank you 🪕🎻
Super news that this has been helpful for you. Well done taking the time to learn these tunes, and incorporate them into your own collection! We do try to repeat a handful of "common core" tunes frequently. So hopefully we're offering some useful, colloquial music, along with a few unusual gems.
Love it all great stuff ❤
Aw, thanks for stoping by!
Thank you so much. What a beautiful time together. ☮️🎵☮️
Thank you for joining us! It was really lovely. This is such a kind and fun bunch of people.
today's playlist was: 1. Warm up Jig: When the Cock Crows it is Day (G) 2. Reels: Torn Jacket (D), Sporting Paddy (A Min) 3. Hornpipes: Galway Bay (E Min), Greencastle (G) 4. Jigs: Anthony Frawley (G), Black Rogue (D) 5. Reels: Nine Points of Roguery (D), Drunken Landlady (E Min) 6. Offertory: Nights on Caledonia Terrace (D) 7. Jigs: Pull the Knife and Stick it Again (E Min), Haste to the Wedding (D) 8. Reels: Sally Gardens (G), Sailor’s Bonnett (D) 9. Polkas: Salmon Tails up the River (G), Weaver’s Delight (D) 10. Waltz: Westering Home (D)
Love that tune! So fun and you guys rock it!
aw, thank you!!
What kind of flute is this?? Beautiful timbre!
Such a great Irish flute--it's a 6-key Pratten flute made by Patrick Olwell.
Great thanks 🌟😀👍
Sounds Fantastic 💈🎖️🌟😀👍🏆💯
Hup!! I love this tune so much, but have yet to learn it. I’d love to see it the Tune of the Month series, wink wink, nudge nudge 😄
hmm... a good TOTM idea. Thanks!
I love Irish music. It's so uplifting. (It's who I am!)
So great that you also love this music. And thank you for joining us for the Virtual Guided Session. Glad to have you there!
Always such a pleasure. I’m so impressed with your ability to remember allllll these tunes.
We forget lots of them, too, Cheryl!
What tune is that playing in the background in the introduction?
hiya! That intro music is the Mountain Road in G, instead of the typical key of D. It's a performance from our Lovers' Well album (myself and Matt Heaton, with Kieran Jordan on the feet).
Fantástico vídeo señor, muchas gracias!
Nice.
Absolutely fantastic. Well done!!
thank you!
This is a beautiful set . Just learned it ❤
Hey! My grandmother's name is Nora. I'm gonna learn this nice tune as a tribute to her. (I seem to be online as you guys post these tunes, great timing. And a great shirt Matt. ) Thanks!
That is so great. Awesome to learn and play this tune for her.
I love it, really like the high parts! my favs! and the arrangement between frames :)
Yes, the high parts are so expressive!
@@ShannonHeatonMusic I fall in love with the melody in 90's when I heard Deiseal's version with the great Cormac Breatnach from Narada collection series (Celtic Legacy). So, your arrangement give back to that part of my life :)
Nice! I agree about breaking down a multi-part tune, it was nice to have it called out 👍🏻
Good! When learning a multi-parter, I think it can be super helpful to 'mark' the start of each section. Love that Matt called them out!
I've been playing my mandolin on steroids since dinosaurs roamed the earth, but usual mandolin tuning. I enjoyed this introduction to the GDAD tuning. Years ago, we played in Chicago with Mike Ryan, who used that tuning. And I really loved how he backed up what Margaret and I were singing/playing. Since I usually play guitar in DADGAD, this tuning would not be too hard to figure out. Anyway, glad to have stumbled on to this video. Hope all is well with you all.
Aw, nice that you played with Mike. And so good that you are still up for playing around with tunings (never know what that will unlock). Thanks for stopping by and saying hey!
I first heard this tune in 1978 played by the BB. What an incredible piece.
The Bothies played the heck out of it.
Just pulled this out of the memory archive recently. Thanks for breaking it down for a memory rephrase!
super! A nice tune that we don't always think to play.
Worked on it by following the video yesterday and today…..I’m killing it! LOL…..thanks to your tutorial! Bravo kids
YES!! Thanks for giving this one some love.
EXCELLENT 👌 THANK YOU SO MUCH🎼🎵🎶🏆
I always look forward to learning a new tune with you guys. You two are a MAJOR part of my Trad Music journey! :)
Oh that's so, so nice. Really glad you enjoy the tunes with us, and how great that we could be of help as you depend your practice. Thanks for the lovely note.
One of my fav. What do you like to play this with ? I like it with drowsy Maggie right after 😊. But I like switching up my sets . I like this concept of video to learn a new tune , even if someone already knows it , it’s good to get a new inspiration on ornaments or variation . Love the accompanying guitar . ❤ 😊
I'm a sucker for changing keys. A D tune that ends on the middle D (like Michael Creamer's)... or that ends on B (like Donald Blue)... could be nice before Drunken LL!
@@ShannonHeatonMusic ohhhh yes Donald Blue ! That is a sweet tune , one of the first I learned from your book . I will try that as a set tomorrow . Yes I am a sucker for key Changes too! So Emotional ! :) Thank you!
thanks for lovely tune!!! sorry to be so picky but I have to set the harp levers -- not E minor? I saw a C# in there. So E Dorian?
Sure, E Dorian. Probably the most common mode for the 'minor' tunes.
Thanks! ✌️🎻🙂😎
Another Gawjus minor reel . Thank you ❤
Aww. You, Aga, and Arthur always appreciate the moody ones!
Excellent additions to the video. Good camera angle for the guitarists' left hand. Love the 'session speed' version for inspiration. And a great tune anyway, lots of opportunity for variation on this one.
Oh, good! Glad these little adds are helpful.
@@ShannonHeatonMusic The 'box' for the chord hand is really not needed. I can see Matt's finger positions just fine.
It would be pretty cool to put chord names up as they are played.
Thanks- you do a fantastic presentation of tunes and model learning by ear - love the variations 7:51
Thanks for the encouragement. Glad to offer a few variations, and if you like any of them try 'em out in other E minor tunes.
Maith sibh ❤👍🏻👍🏻
I love it. Very approachable. I'd love to know what "St. Pat's Style" implies.🍀
Hahaha! NO idea what St. Pat's style would be... I must have said that because we made the video in March. Mostly helpful, occasionally silly?
@@ShannonHeatonMusic Absolutely helpful. I'm learning to play it exactly as you did. THANKS!
Thank you for the great energy and the great VGS series! I recently remembered you two's performance of Hills of Coore and I'm still inspired by it. All the best ❤
Thanks for stopping by the VGS and saying hi again. Love having folks drop by live and later. Take care!
Here u are! For some reason theres also a June 20 video, waiting for people to show up…?🤔🙃
Hi! That's a livestream scheduled for *July* 20th--that's when we'll be VGS'ing next.
Wow the breakdown of tunes to right is awesome!!❤
Great that the indexing is helpful, E!
Beautiful! Thanks soooo much!
